Last Saturday was a busy, enjoyable and wonderful Community day in Corduff with two major successful events taking place.  In the Main Hall at the Community Centre the Oriel Zone Men’s Bowling team, with no less than six Corduff Club members, booked their place in the All Ireland Inter-Zone Boomer Cup Bowls tournament in Belfast on March 23rd.

While all that was going on in the Main Hall, Corduff Pipe band took to the main pitch outside for their first outing of 2024 to lead the Amsterdam Legends team and the Corduff Legends team in a pre-match parade of the pitch before kick-off of the 2024 Brendan Finnegan Memorial Cup football match.  During the match the Amsterdam Legends put on a strong performance against the Corduff Legends, to win back the coveted Brendan Finnegan Memorial Cup.  After the game, the teams, supporters, family and friends of Brendan retired to the Mountain Dew for an evening of nothing less than good old fashioned craic.  The visitors, who came from far and wide, were in awe of the facilities in Corduff, the pitches, centre and bar.  There are too many people to thank individually, but a major Bualadh bos goes out to all the staff and volunteers on the day who went above and beyond to make the day the success it was, the visitors really enjoyed the welcome they received, the food, the music, the banter and fun, with the locals enjoying it just as much.

George McKitterick and his Dutch side counterpart Darren done a wonderful job of organising the event from start to finish.

And although the day was full of fun, we all gathered in memory of Brendan, a young man gone too soon, who would have loved nothing better than to be in the middle of the crowd on Saturday afternoon.  Brendan’s dad Patsy, presented the Amsterdam Legends with the cup that Brendan’s former club, Amsterdam GAC arranged in his memory, so although it is pity to see the cup returning to Amsterdam, it is returning to a good home.

Congratulations to the Amsterdam Legends and the Oriel Zone Men’s Bowling team.
