Car Parking at St. Joseph’s Church – As you may already be aware, we have recently carried outma major refurbishment of our main Church carpark, located adjacent to the Catholic Hall. Trees andnshrubs were pruned, debris was removed, and the entire carpark was power washed. Instead of being dark and dirty, this carpark is now clean and bright. We now respectfully ask that as many people as possible use this carpark when attending St. Joseph’s Church and leave the limited number of parking spaces available in the front courtyard of the Church for those who require wheelchairs or other assistance accessing the Church. We would greatly appreciate your support in this matter – Many thanks in advance.

Field Name Project – Last week a few members of the Heritage Group attended a Field Name Workshop, organised by the County Monaghan Heritage Officer, Kara Ward, which was delivered by Dr. Aengus Ó Fionnagáin (University of Limerick).  Aengus was highly involved in the County Westmeath project to ‘collect and revitalise minor place names and field names’.  Similar projects have been undertaken in counties Louth, Meath and Kilkenny.  Kara is keen to replicate this project in County Monaghan and is looking for assistance in kick starting the collection and mapping of Field names and minor place names.  Our heritage group has made a significant start in the Corduff Raferagh area collecting place names over the past number of years and in recent years collecting approximately 500 field names thus far.  Many farmers have been consulted, but there are many more that we need to have a chat with.  As Aengus explained, we will not be able to collect names for every field, but most farmers have at least one or two fields with names, which is still important to record.  If you would like to get involved, please get in touch with any member of the Heritage Group.  This may be of interest to a current History student, who is looking for a research theme for their thesis.  We are aware this is probably not the best time of year to start such a project, but over the coming months we will be collecting and mapping as much detail as we can.  Watch this space for updates.
