Mary McCabe née Daly, Corkashybane

Our community was deeply saddened last week as word filtered out that Mary McCabe née Daly, Corkashybane, passed away. Many of us had not seen Mary for many years as her illness kept her confined to her home, but we have fond memories of Mary, a lady with a genuine and broad smile when you met her, a gentle voice and a community member who got stuck in and helped out in any way she could. Mary had a deep faith and was very active in helping out in St. Michael’s church, including the altar society, choir, reading, Lourdes group, Pioneers, the annual bazaar fundraiser and much more. For all of those years that Mary was not in the public eye she was lovingly cared for by her husband Charles, her children Cathal, Catriona and Gerard, her brother Michael, sister in law Teresa and a team of wonderful carers.
The large crowd at Mary’s requiem Mass on Sunday last, celebrated by Fr. Peter Corrigan, was a testament to the esteem in which the McCabe & Daly families are held, not just in the Corduff area, but far beyond. It was poignant for the family that Mary should be laid to rest on Mother’s day, but Mary’s daughter Catriona read a beautiful personal short poem as the Communion Reflection, it was a poem that a family member wrote for Mary a few years ago for Mother’s day.
The weather on Sunday reflected the feeling of those gathered to say farewell to Mary, it was dull and overcast with misty rain but there is an old Irish saying, “if rain falls on the coffin during the funeral, it is said that the deceased is happy”, we truly would like to believe that, as Mary truly deserves to be happy.   May she rest in peace.
