The Gathering 2013 2

It’s 10 years now since “the Gathering”, held in 2013.  The tourism-led initiative was aimed to mobilise the Irish diaspora to return to Ireland to participate in specially organised local events.  The government supported initiative led mainly by Fáilte & Tourism Ireland went beyond the normal tourism strategy, this initiative included the encouragement and support of community based events and gatherings.  Stumbling across the brochure of events organised for the Corduff Raferagh area on St. Patrick’s weekend 2013, the brochure outlined a jam packed weekend of activities which started on Friday 15th and continued until Monday 18th.  The weekend started off with an Official Opening of the Gathering in the Community Centre with a recital by Corduff Pipe Band followed by a Trad Music sessions which included artists from all four provinces.  Saturday afternoon was filled with a local Heritage Tour visiting the four local churches in the area, organised by the Heritage Group.  Later a senior football challenge took place.  That evening a Vigil Mass was celebrated in St. Michael’s followed by the Late Late Show.  The show was hosted by Tony Sheridan and many local guests took part including Gerry Murphy, Gerald McAdam, Darren Hughes, Brian Smith & Pat McEnaney.  Entertainment on the night was provided by Aaron Byrne, Peter Brennan, Sean & Brian Walsh, Fergal Marron, Helen Wenham & Niel Pallant.  On Sunday a Community Float took part in the St. Patrick’s day parade in Carrickmacross.  That evening a BBQ took place at the Mountain Dew with Peter Brennan & Setanta entertaining the gathering.  On Monday a concert took place including all age groups – children from Bright Sparks and later members of the Active Retirement Group.  This was without a jam packed weekend, and a great community weekend – hard to believe though that it was 10 years ago, time is flying.
