Thomas John Byrne

Recently an enquiry was received relating to a Byrne family from Sreenty, not the current Byrne family who live in the townland but another family who lived up the lane to the left of Gerry & Jackie Byrne’s house.  Some of the old buildings are still visible behind Gerry & Jackie’s home.  Bernard Byrne born in Sreenty in 1874 married Mary (née Duffy) born in Fairtha in 1882.  They had 9 children, one of whom was Thomas John Byrne, born in 1914.  Thomas emigrated to Surrey in England and married a Galway girl in 1939, they went on to have a large family.  In 1961 it is thought Thomas returned to Ireland, but the family lost contact and now Thomas’s granddaughter would like to find out, if possible, where Thomas is buried.  His mother Mary is buried in Corduff graveyard, the plot has a large Celtic cross and is close to the main door of the church.  The inscription on the headstone – “In loving memory of our mother Mary Byrne, Sreenty, died 3rd June 1924, aged 40 years. Erected by her children.”  It is not known if any other members of the family were buried in this plot as the burial records were either lost or destroyed.  Mary’s husband Bernard is buried in Deansgrage graveyard in Dublin.  Bernard’s sister Rose won a substantial sum of money in the Sweepstake and the family bought a farm near Rockchapel and Bernard sold Sreenty in 1949 and moved to Dublin.  There is a possibility that Thomas returned to Dublin in 1961 and is buried somewhere in Dublin, but the exact location is unknown and there is also the possibility that Thomas was brought back and buried with his mother in Corduff.  Would anyone have any memory of Thomas Byrne returning to Ireland in the early 1960s and any possibilities where he may be buried?  If you can help please ring Bernie on 087 9555762.
