Big Breakfast – What a huge success the Big Breakfast was in Corduff Raferagh Community Centre last Sunday. From early on there was a steady stream of people arriving to enjoy a beautiful breakfast provided by Pauline and her CE staff – Geraldine, Lisa, Betty, Teresa, with the Egg Master PJ on high alert for a number of hours. Committee members and volunteers assisted the team, everyone flat out at their tasks. Thanks to our Toast Master Teresa, who spent hours in charge of the bread station, also providing her own scrumptious brown bread. Many people helped out to set up the hall, set the tables and prepare for what was a wonderful community morning. Families getting an opportunity to sit back and have a chat while enjoying a delicious breakfast without the washing up. Thanks to everyone who helped out in any way and Thank you to everyone who supported the event. Without the sponsorship of a number of suppliers and companies our financial return would have been diminished – so a sincere thank you to Felix Brennan, Cathal from Connolly Mushroom, Golden Irish, Castleblayney and Lidl Carrickmacross. €2750 was raised.
A special thanks to Pauline who as ever goes above and beyond to ensure every detail is covered, and that everyone enjoys their visit to the Community Centre. After 5 hours of cooking, Pauline and her team had the kitchen pristine before they left to enjoy what was left of their Sunday afternoon, a mammoth input by the ladies. Go raibh maith agat ladies.
St. Michael’s Blessing of the graves – Thankfully the weather behaved itself for last Sunday’s Blessing of the graves at Corduff. CE staff, parochial committee, volunteers and family members put in a serious effort to ensure the grounds were in wonderful condition, so thanks to all who made a brilliant effort to have the area tidy and neat. Family members travelled from far and wide to attend this special annual commemoration for deceased members of their families and it is wonderful to see such a great turn out. Fr. McCaughey and Fr. McKeown concelebrated Mass and there was a warm round of applause when Fr. McKeown was congratulated on his 60th anniversary.
Graveyard Project – The second of the temporary local graveyard maps was erected at St. Michael’s Corduff, just in time of the Blessing of the graves, thanks to Michael and Lorcan. The map at St. John’s Corcreagh was erected two weeks ago thanks to Paul and Alan. Carrickmaclim graveyard map and listing as well as St. Patrick’s graveyard, Ardragh are ready for printing. We ask anyone who has a family member interred in any of the local graveyards to have a look at the maps to ensure we have captured all of the information correctly for their family or maybe even the info for families who no longer reside in the area. The map at Corduff, just shows the old graveyard, but all those interred in the new graveyard are recorded on the listing. For our next print of the board we will include a map of the new graveyard.
The information on the listings were taken from the inscriptions on the headstones; also families and individuals forwarded information to us; also information was collated from old newspapers as well as research of the civil records on irishgenealogy.ie
The maps for each of the graveyards have been divided into areas, and many ‘green spaces’ where possible burials may have taken place and obvious ‘unmarked’ graves have been recorded.
The next phase of the project is to record all this information in booklet format, along with other material which we are in the process of gathering such as the maiden names of the ladies who rest in our graveyards and where they came from. We also have in some cases gathered trades, professions, or anecdotes about the families as well as where the families lived, concentrating mainly on those families who no longer live in the area. So by reviewing and correcting the information on the maps and listings this will eliminate such errors when we go to print our booklet.
We invite you to have a look at these temporary maps and listings and to inform us of any errors, omissions or if you have further information which should be added. We thank you for your help and support with this project.
An information sheet is available in the churches and Correction Forms will be provided at the locations for anyone to fill with corrections or omissions and you can place these completed forms in the box provided. Alternatively, you can email the heritage group on corduffraferaghheritage@gmail.com or text the information to Bernie on 087 9555762.
World Day for Grandparents & the Elderly 2024 – Today Sunday, July 28, 2024, the Fourth World Day for Grandparents, and the Elderly will be celebrated throughout the universal Church. The theme chosen by the Holy Father for the occasion is “Do not cast me off in my old age” (Ps. 71:9) and emphasises how grandparents and the elderly are a value and a gift both for society and for ecclesial Communities.
Prayer for Grandparents written by Pope Benedict XVI
Lord Jesus, you were born of the Virgin Mary. The daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne.
Look with love on grandparents the world over.
Protect them! They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society. Support them as they grow older.
May they continue to be for their families’ strong pillars of Gospel faith, guardians of noble domestic ideals, living treasuries of sound religious traditions.
Make them teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future generations the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience.
Lord Jesus, help families and society to value the presence and role of grandparents.
May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love.
Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years of life which you give them. Mary, Mother of all the living, keep grandparents constantly in your care, accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage, and by your prayers, grant that all families may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland, where you await all humanity for the great embrace of life without end. Amen
To all the grandparents and elderly in our community and from our community we wish you a special day today
