Sincere Sympathies – Before we even started our Community Association meeting last Wednesday night, a minute’s silence was observed for the five beautiful friends who lost their lives last weekend – Chloe McGee, Shay Duffy, Chloe Hipson, Dylan Commins and Alan McCluskey. Many members of our group knew Chloe and Shay, or their parents or relatives and like everyone else we cannot comprehend the pain the families are suffering.
As is normal at the end of our meetings we conclude with a vote of sympathy to bereaved families, the five friends were remembered again along with Philomena Malone, Maura McEntee, Patricia Finnegan, Conor Harrington and Margaret Traynor. May they all rest in eternal peace.
Corduff Raferagh Active Retirement – On Tuesday 11th November, 125 members of Active Retirement Regional Groups descended on Corduff Raferagh Community Centre for a social event. Meath, Cavan, Louth and Monaghan were represented. Pauline and staff worked tirelessly to serve up a delicious 3 course meal to all present, some even enjoying a glass of wine. Our ticket sellers were busy as we were lucky to have an abundance of prizes donated, including crystal, tins of biscuits, bottles of wine and various gifts and cash donations. A special word of thanks to Margaret and Tom Fox who donated a beautiful hamper, also to the Inniskeen ramblers who also donated a lovely hamper which was much appreciated. In the musical, ‘the Sound of Music’, the words, the hills are alive with the sound of music comes to mind, but I can say the dance floor was alive to the sound of music provided by the talented Mickey the Butcher. Our own photographer and regional active retirement member John mingled through the crowd taking photos at all angles. This event will appear in the monthly Active Retirement newsletter which reaches every county in the Republic of Ireland. Our RDO thanked everyone for attending and the Regional Committee for organising this event and to Corduff Raferagh Centre for facilitating this event. The first chairman of the Community Centre Peadar Marron gave a brief run down on the Centre and its activities since opening in 1983 to the present day. The Active Retirement anthem was sung led by Imelda from Monalty before everyone departed. This was a memorable event and enjoyed by all. Anyone wishing to join our local group can pop into our meeting and you will be very welcome.
Rest in Peace – At 98 years and 5 months, Margaret Traynor, Drumgurra took her leave of this earth on Saturday night last. A lady who loved conversations, Margaret had a wealth of knowledge about family connections for our area and beyond. Even up until relatively recently Margaret could sort out genealogy conundrums. Whether at home in Drumgurra or in St. Mary’s, Margaret was always delighted and appreciative when visitors arrived for a chat. As a member of the local Céilí Club, she travelled far and wide to Fíor Céilí where she enjoyed the dancing and social element of the Céilí’s. When the Active Retirement group was set up over 20 years ago, Margaret joined the group and again thoroughly enjoyed the social events, tours and activities in the Community Centre. Margaret the youngest and the last of her generation of the Marron’s of the shop, was predeceased by her siblings, Molly, Rosaleen and Patsy. Before she married her husband Larry Traynor, Margaret worked side by side with her father Michael in the shop for many years. In her school days in Corduff NS, Margaret was one of the children who participated in the Folklore Commission in the late 1930s and her essays give us a great idea of life in the area back then. To Patrick, Brian, Mary, Lorcan, Breda, Anne and the extended Traynor family we extend sincere sympathies from the Corduff Raferagh Community. A wonderful mind has left us, sleep easy Auntie Margaret.
Corduff Raferagh Céilí Club – The local Céilí dancing club extends sincere sympathy to the Traynor, Marron & Keelan families on the death of Margaret Traynor. Margaret was a very dedicated member of the club for many years. She was a loyal, pleasant, gentle lady who always had a welcome for everyone on & off the floor. A minute’s silence was observed in memory of Margaret at the weekly class on Tuesday night last. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
