Dr. Rory O’Hanlon  – It’s just five years since Dr. Rory O’Hanlon launched the Corduff Raferagh Heritage group’s very first publication Facts & Folklore recording the history of the “Doctor’s House”, opposite St. Michael’s, in Corduff. Dr. O’Hanlon was the most suitable person to launch the book as he not only served as a doctor in the house, but he also, on a number of visits to his home, shared memories of his time in Corduff and also the greater history of the Dispensary system from its inception in the 1850s. The book was launched during the covid lockdown and with no gatherings allowed Rory video recorded his launch speech which was posted on the groups social media page. Rory was an avid history enthusiast and was very encouraging of local historical and heritage groups, history events and publications, ensuring the preservation of valuable information. In 1965 Dr. O’Hanlon was appointed as the District Medical Officer covering the dispensary areas of Carrickmacross, Raferagh and Donaghmoyne. His contract required cover for these areas 365 days per year with holidays at the discretion of the county manager. Although Dr. O’Hanlon never resided in the house, he conducted weekly clinics ably assisted by his wife Teresa and Nurse Kitty Busby. When meetings started regarding the building of a Community Centre in the area, Dr. O’Hanlon suggested incorporating facilities for a Dispensary into the new building. The new Dispensary opened in the Community Centre in 1983 and he continued to serve in it until 1987. His contribution and support of the Heritage Group will never be forgotten.  Rory had many good friends in the Corduff Raferagh area, and possibly a few foes, but that is life in politics, but we can agree, Rory was very approachable, considerate and a gentle man. He had a long association with the Corduff Raferagh area spanning medical, political and historical interests.  To his family relatives and friends we extend sincere sympathies. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
