Heritage Group Meeting – At last week’s Heritage Group meeting, the attendees recalled the busy schedule of events which took place over the past few months since the group’s last meeting at the end of March.  Just some of the activities included a number of very enjoyable rambles to Cargaghoge & Lisnadarragh, Drumgowna Plantan, Corduff Mountain and Raferagh townland.  The group hosted three Field names workshops and two mapping events in the Community Centre, after attending a Field Name introductory meeting in Doohamlet.  Members also attended the pilot wrap up meeting in Doohamlet two weeks ago.  The annual Mass at Greaghlatacapple Mass Rock as always is the highlight of the year.  Other activities included the completion and erection of Graveyard maps and listings and the launch of a beautiful book called Memories by group member Maura Garvey.  Some members also attended the very informative Old Graveyard workshops in St. Patrick’s, Donaghmoyne and Magheross graveyards.  The group extends congratulations to the Corduff Raferagh Community Association on the fantastic addition of the lift to the building, some of the group members took the lift up to the Heritage Room for the first time, delighted with the ease of access to the upper area of the building.  A wonderful addition to the Community Centre.

Comhaltas on Tour 1984 – In late March 1984 the Northern Standard ran the following article – “Corduff Community Centre, is the venue where the cream of Ireland’s musicians will perform on Tuesday, April 3rd at 8.30 p.m. A galaxy of stars, 20 champions, will perform for your entertainment e.g. Sean Norman (accordion, melodeon, Fear an Ti), Liam Daly (accordion). Tom Gleeson and Nora Butler (Tipperary’s own ballad champions), Cathal Hayden (banjo), Jimmy McHugh and Eilish Byrne (fiddlers supreme), Marian Egan (flute), Michelle O’Sullivan (concertina, accordion, dancer), Seamus O Dubhaine (Traditional dancer), Anne Gallagher and Jimmy Murphy (steps of style) Set Dance team. They are performing at 16 centres in Ireland and Corduff is fortunate in being one of those selected. A hard working committee of C.C.E. in Corduff led by Rev. Fr. McGuinness, President; Patsy Marron, Chairman; Maura McNally, Secretary; Maura McEnaney, Treasurer are leaving no stone unturned at organisational level to make this function a night to remember.”  This event was quite a coup for a small rural parish in the mid-1980s to host a night like this. The Community Centre was just opened the year previously so the article went on to explain the new facility – “Corduff is situated mid-way between Carrickmacross and Shercock. The Community Centre was officially opened in April, 1983 along with its football pitch. It consists of a hall with seating capacity for 400, magnificent stage and balcony with extra seating. Its facilities were much appreciated and admired when hosting Junior and Senior Scor competitions. Heating is first-class. The road will be sign-posted from Carrickmacross [no Eircodes then!] to help strangers who have travelled long distances. Tickets are £3 and in great demand. Please contact Nellie Fisher. Tel. (042) 61945 or Rev. Peter McGuinness, Corduff. Tel. (042) 61356. The Annual Comhaltas Tour of Ireland is an eagerly awaited experience for those who enjoy Traditional Music, Song and Dance.  You are assured of the highest standards of performance and presentation.”  This article is a little blast from the past, mentioning familiar names, but the ticket prices were incredible for a nationwide show of this calibre.  The old 5 digit telephone numbers another blast from the past.  Comhaltas continues to be an integral part of the Community Centre’s calendar, last Friday night the monthly Trad Session took place in the Mountain Dew.  Saturday night coming (22nd) the Carrickmacross CCE annual class concert will take place in the Centre.  In the intervening years the Ceili dancing club is one of the anchor groups in the centre and just two weeks ago the group hosted their bi-annual Fior Ceili in the main hall.  In recent years Sean Nós & Set dancing classes were added to the timetable.  Comhaltas is a pivotal part of Corduff Raferagh Community Centre from its inception and continues right up to today, with events and/or classes happening weekly, monthly and yearly, long may it continue.
